Video: What was the first R-rated movie you saw (or were allowed to see)?
Submitted by Lisa.

When I was 11 or 12, my best friend and I saw Amityville Horror (1979) (I read the book, too). I don't know what our parents were thinking. That movie scared the crap out of me, because, you know, it's a true story.

I freaked myself out for years afterwards whenever I had the misfortune of waking up randomly in the middle of the night at 3:15 am. And the slime oozing out of the walls and the glowing red pig demon eyes in the window. Shudder. That movie really traumatized me. (So much so that even today, I could only watch 58 seconds of the 2:32 trailer below!)

Oh, and I could NEVER live in a house with creepy pie wedge windows; the glowing red ones at 112 Ocean Avenue has forever ruined that architectural element for me.

Haunting or hoax, the true story of the DeFeo murders is horrifying enough.

Speaking of murder (redrum REDRUM), then, when I was 13, I saw The Shining. More trauma. I don't watch scary movies anymore. One recent exception was The Sixth Sense and I could barely handle it.

Here's a "trailer" I WAS able to watch all the way through. ;-)

  1. I never saw anything like that at that age, but I did see um .. Mad Max – Beyond Thunderdome when I was about 10, gosh that scared me.I think there is a scene where kids get gobbled up in sand, and well it stuck with me. I couldn't even listen to Tina Turners "WE don't need another hero" without breaking out in a cold sweat and running to the radio to turn it off. Scary stuff. I am pretty sure that I wasn't at home when I saw these, and mum was PISSED when she found out I had watched it. The other one was TOYS with um ..I forget, freaked me out too, the only thing I can remember is a scene with piranhas I love The Shining (said as *the shinning* Re: simpsons ;) ) not sure that I have seen Amityville HorrorYk Mrs Observant just noticed this is a vox QOTD, I should really look at these more often lol

  2. O NO! Well I hope Silent Hill wasn't too bad and I am glad I was there to tell you what was going to happen. :)
Sure did enjoy ya'll coming over and playing games, although I wish we had given up on Kill Dr. Lucky a little earlier so we could have tried some of the others. Would have been a good trial run at Mafia. ;)

  3. LOL, I was having scary thoughts about that movie as I was drifting off last night. I pathetically begged Scott to help me think about something else so I didn't fall asleep thinking about some of those dreadful scenes. The burning stuff really gets to me (especially since that's a real life horror possibility vs. merely supernatural monsters). I'll recover, though. :-) In fact, I was just thinking about how some of the scenes (particularly those involving children) in Titanic scared me just as badly as any horror movie and haunted my falling asleep time for days and days after I saw it. Really, I have no desire to ever re-watch that movie either!
