$2500 in orthodontia: Before and after

with 5 comments

January and April 2007: M BEFORE orthodontia.

It’s a little hard to see in this pic to the untrained eye because she has so many teeth missing, but she has a HUGE open bite directly resulting from thumbsucking habit (sigh). It ultimately took an orthodontic appliance to break her of the habit. See how her incisors touch, but there is large gap between her top middle tooth and the bottom teeth?

January 2007

April 2007 – the appliance is in, so this is after a little improvement…

January 2009: M AFTER orthodontia.

She had a palate expander installed in early 2007, followed by a medieval looking anti-thumbsucking appliance, complete with spikes! to help further close her bite, followed by braces to help bring her crowded incisors down. She got her braces off two weeks ago (the first thing she ate was a big bowl of popcorn lol)

  1. Wow, what a difference in not such a long time! I’m going to have to remember doing before/while/after photos of SK when she goes through her ortho adventure. Hopefully it’ll begin this spring!

  2. She’s lovely in all the pictures!

I have a feeling “a big bowl of popcorn” may be the first thing William asks for when the braces come off, too! He just got the lower set last week. The uppers didn’t hurt, but he’s feeling these, and not in a good way.

  3. Thanks for the pictures… like the cliche goes, they’re worth a thousand words… my son needs to have braces… and we are bracing ourself for the expense. These photos help.

  4. Terrific pics! My son has been wearing his braces for four months now and hasn’t adjusted to the no-popcorn law yet. His teeth are already looking better though!

  5. I was wondering if your daughter had any speech problems caused by her open bite. My son is about to turn 2 and I don’t know if his speech problems are just a developmental thing that he will grow out of or from an open bite caused by a pacifier. Thanks
